January and February stand out as prime skiing months in Canada, offering a mix of deep powder, quieter slopes, and vibrant resort atmospheres with a whole host of interesting events on the calendar. Read on, as below we’ll dive into why these months shine at seven of our featured resorts.
Frontier Ski product manager, Michael Williamson-Giles, says, “If you book early, there are plenty of good deals to be had from mid-January into early February when the Christmas crowds have cleared and it is before the half term holidays. We have noticed that year on year this period seems to get booked up earlier and earlier so it is always a good idea to make plans well ahead of the season if you want to travel during this time.”
Whistler: Peak Powder and Vast Terrain
Whistler, North America’s largest ski area, thrives in January and February with deep, dry powder and over 8,000 acres of terrain. These months also offer optimal conditions for intermediates and experts, with fewer crowds, and the resort’s lively village, packed with cosy bars and restaurants, suits those seeking après-ski with sophistication.
January is a prime time to visit with some of the heaviest and most consistent snowfall of the season. The resort typically receives around 6.5 to 8 feet of snowfall in January.
Why January/February? Snowfall peaks, ensuring powder-filled bowls and tree runs. February offers longer daylight hours for more skiing time. Early January is particularly quiet, making it ideal for those looking to avoid crowds and have the slopes to themselves.
Michael Williamson Giles, says, ” Early January is noticeably quieter on the slopes—most people have either just travelled for Christmas or are recovering from holiday spending. The good news? That expected lull often extends to prices too, with better value on accommodation.”
Panorama: Vertical Thrills and Relaxed Vibes
Panorama, located in the Purcell Mountains, boasts one of the largest vertical drops in North America, making it a haven for advanced skiers. January and February provide reliable snow conditions and a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for those seeking a less crowded resort.
“Panorama is one of our favourite resorts…We had originally planned to spend only one day at Panorama on the tight schedule we had skiing the Powder Highway resorts. Luckily we decided to leave Kicking Horse one day early and spend the extra day at Panorama. That was the best decision of the ski season because we found Panorama to be super fun.” Ron and AiRung of Ski North America 100
