Top 10 Reasons UK Travellers Must Discover Whistler Ski Resort

For over half a century, Whistler has offered a scale and variety of skiing that few resorts can match. But its appeal goes far beyond its size. Here we outline ten reasons why this Canadian giant remains at the top of its game, and why now’s the right time to book.
1. It’s the largest ski area in North America
Whistler Blackcomb spans a vast 8,171 acres with over 200 marked runs, alpine bowls, glades (avid Canadian skier and Rise & Alpine editor James Pavelick relishes its “unreal marked and unmarked tree skiing areas”), and expert steeps. From long, flowing blues to aggressive double black diamonds, it caters to all skier types—and you’ll never ski the same line twice.
2. Getting to Whistler is easy
With direct flights to Vancouver and a scenic two and a half hour transfer along the Sea-to-Sky Highway, Whistler is one of the most accessible long-haul ski destinations for UK travellers. And with views of Howe Sound, waterfalls, forests and coastal mountains along the way, it’s also one of the world’s most thrilling drives.
3. Everything within resort boundaries is skiable
Unlike European resorts, Whistler Blackcomb is fully managed by the resort, meaning that all terrain within its boundaries—on- or off-piste—is patrolled and safe to ski. Areas like Spanky’s Ladder are steep, remote, completely in-bounds and don’t require a guide.

4. Expert guidance from Extremely Canadian
If you’re an advanced or expert skier, the Two-Day Steep Skiing Clinic by Extremely Canadian gives you guided access to the resort’s toughest terrain—along with coaching and après at Merlin’s Bar & Grill.
5. Excellent for beginners, too
The resort is also ideal for those who are new to skiing, with wide green runs on the Whistler side, world-class ski schools (instruction standards among the highest in North America), and terrain designed for progression.
6. A walkable village with everything on hand
Accommodation is mostly slopeside or within five minutes’ walk. Cafés, ski shops, supermarkets and restaurants are all close by. Rental services like Black Tie Ski will even come to your room.
7. Reliable snow and snowmaking
Whistler averages 38 feet of snowfall a year, with over 697 acres of snowmaking to back it up in warmer spells. Snow reliability at all elevations is part of what keeps regulars coming back.
8. New lift upgrades
Recent investment has introduced new high-speed lifts, including the Jersey Cream Express (upgraded to a six-pack high‑speed chair for the 2024/25 season) and the Fitzsimmons Express (replaced by the new high-speed eight-pack in December 2023), cutting down wait times and increasing mountain access. Plus, every single lift has a great mix of black diamond options.
9. Activities beyond the slopes
When you’re not skiing, you can race down the Olympic bobsleigh track (the only place in Canada where this is possible), take in views from the Peak 2 Peak Gondola, or enjoy live music and craft beer at the Dubh Linn Gate at Pan Pacific Mountainside – one of our favourite spots in the village.

10. Culture & Kicking Back
Beyond skiing, the resort honours Indigenous culture via the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh–Líl̓wat7ul Cultural Centre. Also a winter wellness hub, why not try forest‑therapy walks or spa therapies at the Scandinave Spa?
