Resort info
Sun Peaks combines a compact yet delightful purpose built ski through village with lots of great accommodation and dining options at the foot of three snow-clad mountains. An ideal choice for families with and for those wanting some fantastic skiing with a compact laid back village environment.
The resort’s continued expansion is part of a carefully managed environmentally respectful development, of which Sun Peaks is rightly proud. With terrain spanning 4,270 acres, it is the second largest ski area in Canada.
Tod Mountain, the highest of the resort’s three mountains, has always been home to some tough slopes, but the inclusion of the previously backcountry Gils area now offers some steeps and ungroomed powder runs to whet the appetite of those with a thirst for adventure.
Proof of the ongoing expansion in Sun Peaks is the new West Bowl Express lift which is opening for 2024/25 season which will enhance the access to the West Bowl area of Mt Tod.
Across the valley from Tod lies the Morrisey Peak, traditionally known for its rolling, tree-lined blue cruisers, but also home to some of the steepest terrain in the resort. Recent seasons have seen new trail additions to the steep fall lines of West Morrisey, known as the Laundromat area with amusingly named trails such as ‘Tumble Dry’ and ‘Static Cling’, boosting the number of advanced trails in the resort.
The resort as a whole offers everything from wide-open groomed runs to steep mogul trails. Novices will find much to enjoy on their ski holiday to Sun Peaks and long green trails with plenty of scope to progress. There are also green runs down from the summits of all three mountains meaning you can all ride the lifts together and meet at the base.
Intermediate skiers have a vast choice across the three mountains, including glorious rolling blue trails like Out of the Woods and some short testing blacks like Sting. The picturesque route through the trees of Last Chance and The Other Way ranks among our favourites.
Snowboarders will find lots of interest, including the Terrain Park on Sundance. More advanced skiers and boarders, will head up the Sunburst and Crystal chairs, where some of the tougher black trails await, including the bumps of Headwall and the popular Spillway.
Each of the three mountain areas has something for everyone, making a ski holiday to Sun Peaks a fantastic option for groups of different ages and abilities.
Off the slopes
Sun Peaks with it’s pedestrianised village (ski through for most of the season) is a picturesque resort with a relaxed atmosphere well suited to families and those looking for a laidback ski holiday to Canada.
There are a great selection of dining options, Vertical Café near the base does fantastic coffee and breakfast wraps, Head to Mantles at The Sun Peaks Grand for fine dining and some of the best steak we have ever tasted.
Fondue Stube offers a cozy European atmosphere to enjoy a traditional cheese and meat fondue. Powder Hounds has built a great reputation for international cuisine with a touch of German influences and also a worthy mention to Mountain High Pizza which we can personally recommend! This is just a taste (excuse the pun) of the dining options on offer in Sun Peaks.
There are a number of bars such as Bottom’s and Cahilty Creek where you can enjoy a cold brew with some fantastic pub style food. There is even an Italian and a Japanese restaurant in resort meaning there really is something for everyone.
The village has a laid-back, relaxed feel which is perfect for unwinding in the evenings after busy days on the slopes with a good number of shops and boutiques for all those souvenirs or new ski gear.
If you still have energy left after skiing, you can visit the ice rink or tube park. There is also dog sledding and snowmobiling on offer. Try out the popular Alpine Fondue where you board the Sunburst Express at twilight for and evening of Fondue at Sunburst Bar + Eatery. After dinner take a starlit ski-back to the village (with head torch).
Why not head into Kamloops to see one of Canada’s favourite pass times up close and see the Kamloops Blazers Ice Hockey team with return transportation provided.
For something a little bit different, there are fat-bikes and ski-bikes as well as the innovative Snow Limo on offer to keep you entertained. There are also over 23 miles of impeccably groomed and track set Nordic trails, accessible right from the village.
