Michael’s Trip to Colorado

Skiing the American Rockies: A Breezy Guide to Breckenridge, Beaver Creek and Vail

A few years ago I took a whirlwind trip through Colorado’s top ski spots—Breckenridge and Vail—and it’s a winter wonderland worth exploring. From cozy lodges to buzzing nightlife, here’s the lowdown on what makes these resorts a must for your next ski holiday.

Upon arriving into Denver International, immigration was… let’s say, brisk. The staff were all business—no smiles, just fingerprints and photos. It felt a tad intense, but once through, we were on our way to the mountains!

Breckenridge: Small-Town Charm with Big Slopes
Our first stop was Breckenridge, and the Colorado Mountain Express transfer was a breeze. The desk staff were super friendly, had everything ready, and got us rolling in under a minute. Pro tip: bring a water bottle and shed your coat before boarding—their vans are toasty!

After a 2.5-hour ride, we arrived at Mountain Thunder Lodge. This place is a gem: a short five-minute stroll to downtown Breck, with a free shuttle if you’re feeling lazy. The two-bedroom suite was spacious, sleeping six comfortably with two bathrooms, a sofa bed, and a balcony overlooking a ski run (ski-in when open!). It’s a solid four-star option, remember to tip the shuttle driver a buck or two if you use it.

Dinner at Downstairs at Eric’s was a hit—think classic American diner vibes with killer fries, sports on TV, and friendly staff. For breakfast, we headed to One Ski Hill Place, a swanky spot right by the lifts. Its spacious rooms and prime gondola access make it a top pick for slope lovers.

Breck’s beginner slopes near Maggie’s are perfect for newbies, with gentle runs to build confidence. For thrill-seekers, the Alpine Coaster was a blast—individual cars you control yourself,? You’ll love mooching around town or chilling at Starbucks.

Breck’s nightlife? Lively and varied! The Breckenridge Brewery and Ollie’s Pub deliver classic U.S. bar vibes, while Cecilia’s Nightclub and Cocktail Bar is a fun spot for late-night dancing. Whether you ski or not, Breck’s got plenty to keep you entertained.

We also toured Beaver Run Resort, a massive family-friendly spot at the base of Peak 9. They have a varied selection of room types and stay in building 4 if you want to be right by the lifts. Hotel Alpen Rock is another solid choice, with spacious rooms and a prime spot across from the lifts. The Village at Breckenridge impressed with huge, high-end two-bedroom units—request unit 1505 for a stunner. BlueSky Breckenridge oozed character, like Whistler’s Nita Lake Lodge, but its location is a bit out of the way, requiring a transfer or car hire.

Vail: Luxury Meets Laid-Back
Next up, we transferred to Vail and checked into The Sebastian. This place is pure wow—its lobby is hands-down the best I’ve seen, with cozy fireplaces and comfy sofas. The staff go above and beyond with free water bottles, turndown service, and nightly cookies. My room was dark (no outside view), but the ski concierge storing gear at Vail Village’s base was a nice touch.

Vail’s beginner area at the top of the gondola is a dream—gentle slopes with epic mountain views. For budget-friendly stays, Evergreen Lodge is a lively three-star with a great bar and a short walk to the lifts. Vail Cascade Resort & Spa is a self-contained paradise with its own chairlift, mini-market, and even a basketball court—ideal for families. The Arrabelle at Vail Square nails location and luxury, right by Lionshead base, with stunning rooms. Four Seasons Vail is next-level—spacious, breathtaking rooms. The Lodge at Vail, the resort’s original hotel from the ‘60s, has a rustic mountain vibe with real wood-burning fireplaces but no AC (ceiling fans instead). Manor Vail offers condo-style units near Golden Peak, great for accessing Vail’s back bowls.

Vail’s nightlife is electric. The Red Lion buzzes with live music and great beers, The George has a cool vibe (though it was quiet when we visited). Shakedown Bar has lots of live music with Bad Kitty Lounge being another lively option.

Beaver Creek Mountain Luxury
Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa in Avon feels like a chic resort, with a gondola to Beaver Creek’s base—perfect if you don’t mind being slightly off the main village. Park Hyatt Beaver Creek is a slope-side stunner, with airy rooms and a massive lobby. Osprey at Beaver Creek is a hidden gem—modern, spacious, and a short walk to the village. Trappers Cabin, tucked mid-mountain, is a bucket-list stay: a four-bedroom ski-in/ski-out cabin with a hot tub, pool table, and snowcat access! Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch is five-star heaven, with a luxe spa and gondola access.

A Quick Peek at Keystone
We had a fleeting visit to Keystone with its snowboarder-friendly slopes and compact village. The hotels were spacious and solid, but we’d need a longer stay to fully explore. It’s about 20 minutes from Breck, making it a great add-on for a multi-resort trip with Vail or Beaver Creek. Volunteers for a deeper dive? Count me in!

Colardo is a skiers paradise with something for everyone—cozy lodges, luxury resorts, beginner-friendly slopes, and buzzing nightlife. Whether you’re carving powder, sipping cocktails by a fireplace, or dancing the night away, these Colorado gems deliver. Ready to plan your Rocky Mountain adventure? Let’s get you on those slopes!
